How to choose an electric motorcycle

POSTED: 08/03/2023

Electric motorcycles and mopeds are becoming increasingly popular as a sustainable and eco-friendly mode of transport. They offer a smooth and quiet ride, low maintenance costs, and zero emissions. Once you’ve made the decision to go for an electric motorcycle or moped, the next step is to make sure you choose the right one. The team at Bridge Motorcycles is here to help you make the right choice and talk you through all your electric options, and we stock a range of electrically-powered motorcycles to choose from.

Choosing the right electric motorcycle

Whether you're a commuter, off-road enthusiast, or just looking for a fun weekend ride, we'll help you find the perfect electric motorbike for you. People tend to think of scooter and mopeds when talking about electric bikes but there are already plenty of high-performance, high-powered electric motorcycles already on the market, with more to follow as the market expands. If you’re looking for an electric bike for commutes and city riding, you might be best off with an electric moped or scooter. These lightweight, rapid-charge vehicles are perfect for beating traffic and a cost-effective way of getting around town in your own time. Brands like Piaggio and Vespa have launched electric versions of some of their most popular scooters, with the Piaggio One and Vespa Elettrica available to buy now. If you want more of a like-for-like electric version of a traditional motorcycle, then it’s worth exploring Super Soco’s range. As well as the CU Mini electric scooter, they have a range of fully electric touring, sport and off-road motorcycles available to buy now.
Whatever type of electric motorcycle or moped you’re looking for, the Bridge team can help you find the right one for you.

Consider the range you need

Range is one of the biggest considerations when you’re buying an electric motorcycle since you don’t want to run out of charge anymore than you'd want to run out of fuel! Before you start looking at makes and models, think about;
  • how far you’ll typically need to travel on a single charge
  • how the bike performs in different weather conditions and temperatures
  • additional vehicle features like a power-saving mode or a range extender
  • the availability of charging stations in your area or on your typical route.
This will help the team narrow down the best electric motorcycle or moped for you and what you’ll be using it for.

How much power does an electric motorcycle have?

If you plan on using the motorcycle for motorway riding or off-roading, you'll want a bike with more power as it will help make your journey smoother and safer. If you intend to use it for the daily commute on paved, main roads then less power will suffice. Generally speaking, smaller, lightweight electric motorbikes have a power range of around 3-5 kW, while larger, high-performance electric motorbikes can have a power range of up to 20 kW. Remember though that the power of an electric motorbike is not the same as its speed or range. The power refers to the amount of energy it can produce, while speed and range are determined by factors such as the bike's weight, aerodynamics, and battery capacity.

Battery and charging time

When buying an electric motorbike, it is important to consider the type and quality of the battery. Lithium-ion batteries are the most common type of battery used in electric motorcycles (along with most other electric vehicles) and are known for their high energy density, long life and comparatively short charge time. Some electric motorcycles come with detachable battery packs too, so these may be a good option if you don't have a charging port on your property - or at work, if you're commuting. Again, the Bridge Motorcycles team will be able to advise which make and model best fits your needs.

Service and maintenance

Maintenance and servicing is important for any vehicle and electric motorcycles are no exception. Looking for a bike that has accessible components that can be easily serviced or replaced will save you both money and time. It’s also important to look for an electric motorbike that has a wide network of service centres, so you can easily find a qualified professional. When you buy an electric motorcycle or moped from Bridge Motorcycles, we offer a range of servicing, MOT and repair options in our workshop which can either be factored in to your purchase as part of a service plan or used as and when required.
Choosing the right electric motorbike is a crucial step in ensuring a safe and enjoyable riding experience. By considering factors such as power, speed, range, and safety features, you’ll be able to choose the perfect motorcycle and enjoy the benefits of eco-friendly riding.
