With so many motorcycle apps on the market, both free and paid, which ones would we recommend and why? Whether you enjoy touring rides on a sunny weekend or use your motorcycle for commuting, we look at the five best motorcycle apps available in the UK right now and why you should have them on your smartphone.
One thing does remain consistent with all apps; to get the best use of them you should invest in a good quality phone mount for your motorcycle, ideally with a charging port if you regularly ride long distances. You can check out our article on top 10 motorcycle accessories for more information.
Best App for Motorcycle Routes - Calimoto
Current Google rating: 4.4/5 & 1M+ Downloads
We found Calimoto the best app for motorcycle routes and scenic riding, with added functionality to make the ride more interesting. You can generate a round trip, plan a route and share the trip with other Calimoto app users.
You can choose from a range of pre-set rides near your location, worldwide rides or look for something specific in the app. By using the ‘round trip’ option, it’s possible to specify the distance and profile of the ride, like ’60 miles’ and ‘winding’. If you’re up for an adventure, you can pick ‘Random tour’ and explore somewhere new.
The free motorcycle app includes basic functions, however it’s possible to add functionality with paid upgrades. These include full world mapping, offline world maps, super-winding routes, lean angle and acceleration recording. The user experience and diverse range of routes available made this one of our favourite apps for motorcycle routes.
Best App for Motorcycle Navigation - Waze
Current Google rating: 4.3/5 & 100M Downloads
Waze is a Google-owned sat nav app, with a specific motorcycle mode built in. The motorcycle mode features two-wheel specific routes that may not be accessible for cars, or roads which motorcycles will be able negotiate far easier than their four-wheel counterparts.
To activate the motorcycle mode on the app, open the settings menu, then select navigation, followed by vehicle type, and choose motorcycle.
We found this app particularly useful for navigating whilst on the go. Neat features include alerts on road closures and restrictions. It's also possible to instruct the app to avoid toll roads, motorways, and ferry crossings, if you wish to do so.
Waze also features a voice activated function. By speaking ‘OK WAZE’ into your helmet Bluetooth headset (if you have one) it’s possible to ask the app to navigate to a certain point.
This app receives great reviews and in our opinion it’s one of the best motorcycle apps for navigation available on the market. Best of all, it’s free!
Best App for Motorcycle Location - What3Words
Current Google rating: 3.5/5
What3Words is not strictly a motorcycle app, but it gets our vote as a reassuring safety measure. When riding long distance, in particularly remote areas, off road or long distance across moorland, you may find this app particularly useful from a safety perspective.
What3Words is designed to be simple and is used by emergency services to pinpoint your location - accurate to 3m x 3m area. If you’re riding in remote areas, this app is a reliable way of pinpointing your location globally, as long as you have a data signal.
We hope you’ll never need to use it, but it’s comforting to know that you have a quick way of pinpointing your location with high accuracy if you break down or need assistance.
Best App for Global Weather Forecasting - Met Office
Current Google rating: 4.6/5 & 1M + downloads
The Met Office app offers 1 hour to 7-day visibility; perfect for spontaneous trips and for planning ahead. The app displays information on cloud cover, temperature, precipitation, snow, ice, wind, sunrise/sunset, pollen count, pollution and more. It’s also possible to enable customisable notifications if you want a warning ahead of time if bad weather is closing in or if the forecast changes to more agreeable riding weather.
While it’s not specifically designed as a motorcycle app, the Met Office app has good reviews and given that it’s produced and run by a weather monitoring organisation, it makes sense to use it when you’re planning your day or out on the road.
