We really are spoilt for choice in the South West, there are so many fantastic roads to ride throughout Devon that you could dedicate a week trying to ride them all and still find yourself discovering brilliant new avenues to explore. One simple, but popular route takes you on A377 between Exeter and Barnstaple. It’s a brilliant road that has bit of everything; fast sweepers, tighter, more technical sections and also ample overtaking areas to get by those pesky caravans – so long as you plan ahead carefully. And, heading a little bit further on to the coast will see you arrive at Croyde, where you can stop off for a bite to eat and chill by the beach before heading back.
From Bridge, turn right towards the mini roundabout and take the second exit onto Church road and follow it towards the traffic lights at the end of the road. From there turn right where you’ll see Sainsbury’s on the right hand side of the road – if you’ll need petrol you can fill up here, or at the Esso garage slightly further up the road.
You’ll now find yourself on the A377, and navigating from here should be pretty straightforward. Following the signs for Crediton will take you successfully through Exeter, once out of the city, it’s simply a case of following the road all the way through to Barnstaple. Along the route at Copplestone, you’ll need to bear right at the bridge with the traffic lights to remain on the correct route, but it’s all well signposted.
Following on from Copplestone the road turns super fun, and also a lot less busy too. This is where the real fun can be had. Generally the road conditions are usually good, bar the odd pothole and occasional bit of gravel, carful observation will see this easily dealt with though. The only other thing to be careful of is water runoff from surrounding hills after heavy rainfall, generally speaking though, this isn’t usually too bad.
Once at Barnstaple, the pace turns down as you skirt the town following the signs for Braunton. If you’re feeling like you might not necessarily want a sit-down meal in Croyde, then Squires fish and chip shop in Braunton is an excellent alternative.
At the traffic-lighted crossroads in Braunton, turn left to get to Croyde. From here it’s a straight road through to Croyde, and a fantastic way to end the journey it is too. Passing through Saunton, you’ll be rewarded with fantastic views as you hit the final stretch of road as you head around the final corners where Croyde reveals itself.
